https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/land/Pages/land-records.aspx Land Grants to Veterans From the seventeenth century, the French and British governments encouraged former soldiers to settle in Canada. Loyalists received land grants after the American Revolution, as did Canadian militiamen following the War of 1812. The Government of Canada followed the same tradition with grants to veterans. The Soldier Settlement Act (1917, 1919) and the Veterans' Land Act (1942) allowed veterans of the First and Second World Wars to purchase land with the help of government loans, with additional funds for livestock and equipment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_Settlement_Board https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Soldiers'_Civil_Re-establishment https://canadianhistory.ca/natives/timeline/1910s/1917-soldiers-settlement-act About Canada, Soldier Homestead Grant Registers, 1918-1931 (Ancestry) With the end of the First World War and the troops that would be returning from Europe in mind, Canada’s 1917 Soldier Settlement Act, and its 1919 revision, made land grants and loans available to soldiers. A person who had been in active service during the First World War and who was eligible for a free homestead entry under the Soldier Settlement Act was known as a Soldier Settler. These records consist of single-line register entries noting applications for grants. Entries list name, homestead number, date of application, date of grant, land description, area (acreage), fee, application number, district number, list number, and remarks. The early books also contain reference to the date of first occupancy, the expiry of term, folio general register, and patent reference number. REPORT OF THE SOLDIER SETTLEMENT BOARD OF CANADA, MARCH 31, 1921 https://archive.org/stream/reportofsoldiers00canauoft/reportofsoldiers00canauoft_djvu.txt PURPOSE OF LAND SETTLEMENT LEGISLATION In Canada, agriculture is the basic industry. The opportunities of securing suitable farming land at reasonable cost exist in all provinces of the Dominion, and particularly in the uncultivated areas of the middle west. Land settlement on business lines increases the national growth and prosperity. An important demand arose for land settlement facilities on behalf of returned men. It was, therefore, sound national policy, as well as good re-establishment, to add to the agricultural citizen- hood of Canada as great a number as possible of the best of its manhood, those who had seen active service. Since land settlement of the character and magnitude inaugurated under the Soldier Settlement Act is in many respects unique, it is of interest to refer to some of the underlying principles and safeguards on which the measure of progress so far attained has been based.

Men kanskje nokon veit råd?

1 time 59 min siden
Tja, kanskje.

Thank you Carl! That's a good piece of information to know, thank you! I have a little cheat sheet for abbreviated words that appear on Norwegian records/census and what they mean. The language barrier has been little fun for me, so I appreciate your guys help so very much. Thank you guys for you help, these two Mari's are indeed the same woman. The daughter of Abraham Jakobsen and Aslaug Johnsdatter. My grandfather now has five DNA matches now that all descend from Abraham's grandparents. It's just a matter of trying to figure out where my family fits in.

Correct. And the thing before that is "Husm.", which stands for "Husmand" - what in English might be called a "cottager", i.e., someone doing farming on a very small plot of land (a status below a full-blown farmer).

This is so exciting! So the current day Hogan's in America have inaccurate information then, Arnold was born in 1899, and his parents married that year. They were married in municipality of Nedre Eiker then, west of Oslo, and not Oslo itself. I'm having trouble deciphering the marriage record. They are listing the father's name of each person correct? It's saying that Mary's fathers name is Abraham Jakobsen?

Yes this is the same Albert Teodor Haugen. This is the only mention I can find of Albert and Mari's first son Arnold Leonard Haugen on DA. It says he was born in 1899, but the date and month of birth also match every record that exists of his in the USA, except for birth year. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000004971827 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/65758370
